Strengthening the protection of pets: stricter penalties for animal poisoning and deliberate endangerment.
Public petition n°4028
Petitioner: Isabelle Mulcahy
This petition is available in other languages:
Object of the petition
This petition calls on Luxembourg to strengthen its legal provisions to better protect pets and wildlife from deliberate or negligent poisoning. We request clearer and stricter penalties, including possible custodial or suspended sentences, mandatory community service in animal shelters, and full financial responsibility for veterinary and long-term medical costs resulting from such acts.
Reason for the petition
Each year, animals in Luxembourg suffer or die as a result of toxic substances such as rat poison being placed carelessly, irresponsibly, or with harmful intent. These incidents cause immense suffering to animals and significant emotional and financial trauma to the families involved. We believe Luxembourg must reinforce and modernise its legal framework. We advocate for measures, such as examples: Penalties of up to five years of custodial or suspended sentence, depending on intent and severity. Mandatory community service, especially in animal shelters or animal welfare organisations. Financial accountability, including reimbursement of all veterinary and long-term treatment costs. Clearer legal definitions and improved reporting mechanisms. Public awareness campaigns promoting responsible use of toxic substances. Pets are family. They deserve real protection - and affected families deserve justice.
