Purpose of the petition

To request the amendment of current labor laws in Luxembourg to allow full-time employees (working 40 hours per week) the legal right to engage in voluntary, compensated work during weekends.

Reason for the petition

The economic landscape in Luxembourg has continued to present challenges for working families, particularly in relation to the real estate market. The acquisition of residential properties by single-income households has become increasingly unfeasible due to persistently high property prices and limited affordability. Despite various initiatives, the government's measures have not significantly mitigated the crisis in housing accessibility and affordability. Given this reality, increased income through additional work remains one of the few viable pathways for families to improve their financial standing. However, under the current legal framework, the performance of work beyond the standard 40-hour week-especially on weekends-is subject to restrictive conditions. In particular, Sunday work is broadly prohibited, with exceptions granted only in narrowly defined circumstances (e.g., essential services, management roles, or force majeure). It is therefore proposed that employees who voluntarily wish to work during weekends be granted the legal right to do so, without the imposition of compulsory weekend labor. The right to choose how one's time is used-particularly when additional work is freely chosen and economically necessary-should be respected and legally supported. Such a measure would neither obligate employers nor employees to engage in weekend labor but would rather legalize and formalize a channel through which voluntary economic activity could occur. The model of flexible, voluntary weekend work has already been observed in neighboring countries under specific sectors, such as hospitality, logistics, and healthcare, where labor flexibility has enabled improved service delivery and enhanced worker income. In conclusion, the right to perform voluntary weekend work should be recognized by law as a means of adapting to economic reality, supporting worker autonomy, and enabling families to pursue higher financial stability in a legal and protected framework.
