Tour de Luxembourg: No traffic chaos - or not at all anymore!
Public petition n°4256
Petitioner: Pierre Misteri
This petition is available in other languages:
Object of the petition
The first stage of the 2026 Tour de Luxembourg arrived in Luxembourg City on 16 September at around 5:45 p.m., precisely at a time when many people were travelling home from work. The road closures and diversions put in place that day showed that an event of this scale needs to be better coordinated with everyday traffic. This petition therefore calls for the following measures for future editions of the Skoda Tour de Luxembourg and other major events: * finishes and major road closures should, as far as possible, be avoided during peak hours; * clear and simple diversion routes should be planned in advance; * the public should be informed sufficiently early and clearly about road closures and the routes that remain accessible; * road closures and diversions should be reported as quickly as possible to navigation apps and other traffic information services; * emergency services, home care services and other essential services must be able to circulate at all times; * major events should only be authorised where effective traffic management can be guaranteed; * organisers should, as far as possible, bear the additional costs directly caused by the event, in particular those relating to police presence, municipal officers, signage and traffic management.
Reason for the petition
The experience of this stage showed how quickly major road closures can lead to traffic jams, detours and uncertainty about which routes remain accessible. For an event of this scale, traffic management must be planned with the same care as the sporting event itself. It is not acceptable for a large part of the population to face significant restrictions for several hours because of an event that directly interests only a small part of the public or from which only a minority directly benefits. Major road closures during peak hours should therefore be avoided as far as possible, clear diversion routes should be provided, and the relevant information should also be transmitted promptly to websites and apps that show real-time traffic conditions. The question of costs should also be clearly addressed. Where such an event requires additional police deployment, municipal officers or other public measures, these costs should not automatically be borne by the public. The organiser should cover the costs directly caused by the event. If an event of this scale cannot be organised in a way that reasonably protects traffic flow, essential services and the interests of the wider public, its format or location should be reconsidered.
