Purpose of the petition
This petition calls upon the Parliament to take active measures against the spread of invasive species such as the raccoon, Nile goose, and Asian hornet, in order to protect the country's biodiversity, agriculture, and public wellbeing.
Reason for the petition
We express our deep concern regarding the growing presence and spread of invasive animal species in Luxembourg, including but not limited to the raccoon (Procyon lotor), the Egyptian or Nile goose (Alopochen aegyptiaca), and the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina). These species pose a serious and escalating threat to our local ecosystems, native wildlife, and, by extension, to the balance of our environment and the safety of our citizens. The raccoon and the Nile goose have both been observed to compete aggressively with native species for food and nesting sites, causing measurable harm to local fauna and biodiversity. The Asian hornet, in particular, poses an immediate ecological and economic danger by preying upon essential pollinators such as honeybees, undermining pollination processes and impacting agricultural productivity. We therefore urge the government to: 1. Promote and facilitate the controlled hunting or capture of invasive species such as raccoons and Nile geese through regulated initiatives, awareness campaigns, and support for local hunters and wildlife associations. 2. Provide sustained state funding and coordination for the elimination of the Asian hornet, including nest detection programs, professional extermination support, and community reporting mechanisms. These actions would not only protect Luxembourg's unique ecosystems but also preserve the integrity of its agriculture, forestry, and overall environmental health. While some official reports have suggested that hunting or active eradication measures may not significantly impact invasive species populations, such conclusions remain speculative until decisive, coordinated action is implemented and monitored. Inaction, on the other hand, will only allow the problem to worsen, leading to further ecological imbalance and higher long-term costs-both environmental and economic. We therefore call upon the Parliament to act now, before the damage becomes irreversible.

Aim of the petition: Cette pétition appelle le gouvernement luxembourgeois à prendre des mesures actives contre la propagation des espèces invasives telles que le raton laveur, l'ouette d'Égypte et le frelon asiatique, afin de protéger la biodiversité, l'agriculture et le bien-être public du pays. Motivation of the general interest of the petition: À l'attention du Gouvernement du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, du Ministère de l'Environnement, du Climat et de la Biodiversité, et du Ministère de l'Agriculture, de la Viticulture et du Développement rural. Nous, soussignés, exprimons notre profonde inquiétude face à la présence et à la propagation croissantes d'espèces animales invasives au Luxembourg, notamment le raton laveur (Procyon lotor), l'ouette d'Égypte (Alopochen aegyptiaca) et le frelon asiatique (Vespa velutina). Ces espèces représentent une menace sérieuse et croissante pour nos écosystèmes locaux, la faune indigène et, par extension, l'équilibre de notre environnement et la sécurité et santé des citoyens. Nous demandons donc au gouvernement de : 1. Promouvoir et faciliter la chasse ou la capture contrôlée d'espèces invasives telles que le raton laveur et l'ouette d'Égypte par des initiatives réglementées, des campagnes de sensibilisation et un soutien aux chasseurs et associations locales. 2. Fournir un financement public durable et une coordination pour l'élimination du frelon asiatique, notamment par la détection des nids, le soutien professionnel à la destruction et la mise en place de mécanismes de signalement communautaires. Ces actions visent à protéger les écosystèmes uniques du Luxembourg et à préserver l'intégrité de son agriculture, de ses forêts et de sa santé environnementale. Bien que certains rapports officiels suggèrent que la chasse ou les mesures d'éradication actives pourraient ne pas avoir d'impact significatif, ces conclusions demeurent spéculatives tant qu'aucune action coordonnée n'a été mise en oeuvre et évaluée. L'inaction, quant à elle, ne fera qu'aggraver la situation, entraînant un déséquilibre écologique et des coûts accrus à long terme - tant environnementaux qu'économiques. Nous appelons donc le gouvernement à agir dès maintenant, avant que les dommages ne deviennent irréversibles.
